Water features in gardens are a source of enjoyment to many gardeners. They add an interesting aspect and can be very restful. There are a lot of products and advice available for anyone wanting to start an aquatic garden. You don’t need a lot of space and a basic pond doesn’t have to be very expensive. Some gardeners like to go a bit further and put a fountain or a statue with the pond.
The pond will benefit from some water garden plants. In addition to assisting in keeping the pond in a healthy condition, they will be an attractive feature. Water Lillies are particularly popular for their delicate flowers that sit on the water’s surface. Most of the plant is submerged and they need to be placed 1-2 feet below the surface. They are put into containers sometimes. Another example of a submerged water plant is the Parrot Feather. These plants are an asset to the aquatic garden if there are fish in the pond because they stimulate oxygen.
There are other plants that are visible on the surface but their roots lie underwater. This type is called marginal plants and they are placed in a pot at just below the surface. Varieties include the iris, arrowhead, lotus, elephant ear or pickerelweed. The other sort of plants, suitable for an aquatic garden, are the ones that float on the surface. These are very useful as they decrease the presence of algae in the pond by providing shade. They need careful control however, as they grow and spread very quickly. Varieties include the water hyacinth, water spangle, water clover and mosquito fern.
Of course, a water garden is most appealing when it contains fish. Goldfish, such as shubunkin, common goldfish and wakin, are very popular. Koi are very attractive and some varieties are expensive. Other choices include minnows, golden orfe and golden tench. Most fish survive happily without heating but a heater may be needed in particularly cold places during winter, just to stop the water from freezing up. Pumps and filtration equipment is necessary, in order to maintain the oxygen levels that the fish require.
The reason that pond water appears green is because of the growth of algae. This must not be allowed to take over, as the blanket weed variety is apt to do if not removed. It is a particular problem during warm weather but there are various methods to keep algae under control in an aquatic garden.
The beautiful Columbine flower belongs to the genus Aquilegia, one of the most common and prolific flowering plants in the Northern hemisphere. The common name, Columbine, derives from Latin and means “doveâ€. You’ll see why if you view the flower from beneath – it looks very much like a flock of doves circled around a bird bath.
The columbine flower is popular with home gardeners for their simple and delicate beauty. They are also found as wildflowers in meadow, mountain and woodland settings as well as in home gardens. The Columbine flower is favored by hummingbirds attracted to the nectar. Hummingbirds help to pollinate the field of Columbine flowers by carrying the pollen smudged on their heads from flower to flower.
There are some 65 species of this delightful flower, ranging in size from just three inches to almost three feet tall. These plants bloom in late spring and into early summer. They enjoy lightly shaded locations in areas where heat is intense, such as in the South, while at high altitudes and in more temperate areas, the Columbine flower grows in full sun. All varieties grow taller in direct proportion to the warmth of their climate.
Native Americans used the seeds of the Columbine flower medicinally, preparing an infusion of the seeds to treat headache and fever.
Essential to growing Columbine is well-drained soil. Heavy clay soils won’t do for this perennial, as waterlogged roots will cause them to die in winter. As long as the soil is well-drained, these plants are not fussy. Average potting soil will do just fine.
When planting, space taller varieties a foot apart and shorter varieties six inches apart. Colors of the Columbine flower virtually span the rainbow, including white, yellow, blue and pink.
Although individual plants may not last for more than a few years, they propagate from seed in a very prolific manner. Starting with just two species in your garden, you’ll soon have hybrids galore. The Columbine flower produces lots and lots of seeds. The only problem with hybrids is that they do not produce plants exactly like the parent. There is a way around this. As the new hybrids grow, just pull those you don’t like before they set seed. Keep the ones you do like. Within several generations, you’ll have a bed of your own attractive hybrid Columbine flowers.
In Europe, the common Columbine, Aquilegia vulgaris, is known as “Granny’s Bonnetâ€, growing 18 to 24 inches tall. Like all Columbines, cross breeding over many centuries with so many species has blurred the original species to the point where identifying the original is almost impossible.
A bed of Columbine flowers is a delight in the garden. A visit to your nursery will yield a panoply of choices sure to please.

When I first decided to make a bamboo garden, I thought it would be easy. You see, I have had lucky bamboo plants for years. I knew how easily bamboo grew. I figured that bamboo gardening would be a snap. You just let it grow and grow, and that is it. I was pretty ambitious. I even thought that I could use the plants that I grew in my garden to make bamboo floors for my house. I did not realize what I was up against.
You see, I was right and I was wrong. In some ways, bamboo gardens are very easy. Growing plants for a bamboo garden is quite simple. Bamboo grows like wildfire. You can not stop it from growing! That, however, is the problem. A proper bamboo garden is not the same as a stand of wild bamboo. To get a bamboo garden to look like something is actually a pretty difficult trick. You see the bamboo nurseries with their carefully crafted stands of bamboo, and you think it is easy. It is not! It requires a lot of work. Not only does bamboo grow quickly, but it is extremely tough.
The secret to bamboo gardening is to work at it every day or two. A bamboo garden is something that becomes exponentially more difficult the less frequently you tend to it. If you can pull out unwanted bamboo saplings when they are young, carefully shape the bamboo stems that you have as they grow, and be involved with every stage of planning your garden, it will not really take that much time. I would say that a moderately sized bamboo garden can take as little as 10 to 20 minutes a day on average. You have to stick with it, however, or else it can become overwhelming very quickly. The bamboo garden will become nothing but an overgrown stand the bamboo. It happened to me, and it can happen to you. The bamboo will starve out everything else in the garden!
One of the most important things to consider when you are planning bamboo gardens is what other plants to use and where to place them. The bamboo garden, after all, is not primarily about the bamboo. The bamboo is just a backdrop. It is about the few, sparse, other flowers you place around the garden. Each of these flowers must be a work of art in and of itself.
I have always loved plants, but they have never loved me. Some people have a green thumb, but I am just the opposite. My very touch can kill most plants. The only ones that I’m good with, in fact, are ones that require almost no care. Cacti have always survived my withering touch, and succulence do alright as well. Nonetheless, I despaired of ever having my own garden until one of my friends suggested a solution: cactus gardening.
I had never heard of cactus gardening, but my friend assured me that it was quite common. Although not very many people have a cactus garden around here, where she comes from they all over the place. Cactus gardens are extremely popular in the bay area around San Francisco. Between the sunlight and the moderate rain, anything will grow there – including cacti. I am pretty impulsive, and as soon as I decided on cactus gardening, I was ready to go out and make some purchases. Nonetheless, my friends stopped me. She told me that I should go to a botanical cactus garden before I decided what I wanted.
There was more to growing cacti than I had realized before. There are many different kinds of cactus, and each of them requires slightly different conditions. When I first heard about cactus gardening, I thought that I would have to renounce traditional gardening values. I figured that I would not be able to see any flowers – just plain, green cacti. To my surprise, however, many cacti flower regularly. Cactus gardening is actually every bit as dynamic as any other form of gardening. The cacti grow, bloom, and hibernate – at least to some degree. Although the cacti never whither for the season and drop their spikes, they do have slow periods where they are resting, like other perennial flowering plants.
I started cactus growing yesterday. My friend told me that, before I started the cactus garden, I needed to make sure all of my cacti had matured to some degree in their pots. Now I have several pots to tend to each day, and so far everything is going excellently well. Soon I’ll have a flawlessly working cactus garden – the only one on the block. I know that some of the neighbors will resent it – they resent anything that looks different on this black. Other ones, however, will probably think it is pretty cool. Personally, I always love a new look. Thank God for cactus gardening!
Until recently, I was not a very big fan of backyard fences. I thought that backyard fencing was ugly, unnecessary, and created the wrong idea. I understood that people with pets – particularly dogs – needed both back and front yard fences, but I felt that if you didn’t fit into this category there was no good reason to put up a fence. After all, most backyard fences are ugly. It only serves to separate you from your neighbors, break up the space, and create an ugly barrier that blocks your view of the surrounding community.
Unfortunately, I have been driven by circumstances beyond my control to put up a backyard fence. You see, the neighborhood is changing. It is happening slowly, but I can see it. Maybe the country as a whole is changing – I don’t know. All I know is that the kids these days do not act in the same way that we acted when we were kids. They don’t have respect for other people and for other people’s property. It seems like hardly a weekend goes by when there aren’t kids sneaking into our backyard swimming pool. I wouldn’t mind so much, except they get drunk and sometimes make a lot of noise. I know that it is only a matter of time before some terrible accident happens, and I don’t want to be the one responsible for it. That is why have been looking into backyard fences.
The problem is that the type of backyard fence that I want doesn’t exist. I was a kid once, and I understand how easy it is to jump some backyard fences. Chain-link fences, unless they are very high, can be jumped. I tried putting up wooden backyard fences, but it did no good. The kids simply knocked a hole in it – something I never would have considered doing as a child.
I didn’t want to get backyard fences with barbed wire – that looked ugly and paranoid. Wrought iron fences, however, didn’t seem to solve things quite right. You can put them up as backyard fences, of course, but they cost a fortune. They are so hard to work with that you need to get a fence contractor instead of doing it yourself. I am a big fan of do it yourself landscaping, and I want to avoid hiring a contractor if I can. The police won’t help me, so I can’t figure out what to do.
I remember back when I was getting married in 2001 I had met a girl online who lived in New Jersey. She had told me that she had met her husband-to-be online, and that they were now getting married. Back then, online romance was something of a mystery. Many people were scared about the prospect of finding a mate or even a real friend online. Today these relationships are more and more common, and many are finding what they consider to be the love of their life on the Internet.
I am still weary of some of the people at me online. I have been on the Internet long enough now to know that most of the people you talk to are not representing themselves as they really are. I guess everyone does this to a certain degree, but there are some people out there who want an online romance so badly that they completely misrepresent what they look like, who they are, and even where they live. For every good story you hear about online romance, there are five bad ones to go along with it.Â
One of my closest friends was recently engaged in an online romance. She was not looking for this sort of thing, as she met this person on a divorce support web site. She had absolutely no intentions of dating anyone at that point her life, but the online romance bloomed before she knew what was happening. I met the guy myself a few months ago, and I found him to be a delightful person. I have no idea if they are still dating at this point, as I have not talked to her in a few months.
I do know that she was just as surprised as I was that she found an online romance. We were both pleasantly surprised to find that he was exactly what he claimed to be, and when she met him, they were no bad surprises. Though I am very happy for her, I know that she is an exception. There are many people who are meeting online that developed a great online romance, but there are many more who are left bitter and disappointed. Remember to use common sense when dating and talking to people online. If something sounds too good to be true, you can bet your bottom dollar that it is. Trust your gut feelings.
The world as we once knew it is totally changing before our very eyes. Naturally this can be interpreted in many ways. To be specific, I’m talking about how we do business and purchase goods. Cash, checks and plastic aren’t the only game in town anymore. In this day and age it’s becoming more and more about electronic transfer. It happens at the click of a mouse. Suddenly someone living in Japan has paid someone who resides all the way over in Australia. You might as well be sending cash, because it comes straight out of your bank account. I’m talking about Paypal. It’s the freshest and most innovative way to purchase, sell, transfer and receive paychecks. The paypal shop is the way of tomorrow and today.
What if you could buy something from a random stranger online without sending them a money order or personal check? Well, if you’re hip to the ways of 2007, then you’d already know that you can. All you need to make it happen is a Paypal account. Bring up the website at www.paypal.com. Start an account of your very own today. You can conveniently add your bank account and credit card to it. This way you’ll be able to shop online and purchase things directly using your bank account. That definitely beats a credit card, which charges you loads of interest. Pay with the money you already have at your disposal. Numerous companies are becoming paypal shop ready. It’s no longer just an EBay thing. Even Sharper Image accepts Paypal payments now days. It truly speeds up the process. There’s nothing to check or verify. The payment is sent electronically and immediately. This way your goods can be sent ASAP as well. This is the way business transactions were meant to be.
The thing I love about Paypal concerns work. Any freelance worker can do a job via the web and receive electronic funds from the contractor. It goes directly into your Paypal account and you’re notified by email. So whether you’re interested in the paypal shop online routine or a convenient way to send and receive funds, Paypal is right for you. Get online and give it a shot the next time you’re about to use a credit card.
By now, most people have at least heard of spyware removal programs, and many people have them on their computer. There are literally thousands of spyware programs available on the Internet. Although some of the spyware software is good, not all of it is. Typically, if you get a spyware program that isn’t well made, it will simply do nothing. A lot of the spyware programs, you see, are designed by amateurs. They are only designed to catch and remove spyware from a few sources. They are updated infrequently, and as such cannot give your computer the protection that its needs. All they can do is give you a false sense of security which may lead you to take even bigger risks over the Internet.
Some spyware programs are downright malicious. Although they may look like spyware removal software, they are actually spyware themselves. These spyware programs are known as Trojan horse viruses. They pretend to remove spyware while actually installing it on your computer. If you are not a savvy computer user, you can literally destroy your data by downloading specious spyware software. You may think that you are protecting your computer, while you are actually destroying it.
This is why spyware programs are not the first step in cleaning up and protecting your hard drive. If you suspect that you might be infected with spyware, the first thing you should do is back up your hard drive. You do not necessarily have to back up the entire thing, but you at least have to back up the important data on it. Any mp3 music files that you want to keep, any text files or documents that are important, and any programs that you cannot live without, should all be backed up onto some type of storage medium. Only then should you download spyware programs to protect your computer hard drive.
You may think that you have to pay money for good spyware programs, but in fact many of the best ones are available for free. You can download Ad-Aware, a spyware protection program, for absolutely nothing from the Internet. Although there is a more highly rated Professional Edition that costs some cash, the free version works perfectly well for most computer users. It even gives you frequent spyware program updates to protect you from the latest spyware and viruses. There is no need to pay money for spyware programs if you know where to download them for free.
